A New Home (continued)

Here are few more drawings that I've been doing of our new house. Not much to say about these...just trying to keep my eyes and hand active while I'm taking a break from painting. My time has been more limited this summer due to the adjustment from our move and the kids being out of school. I find myself dealing with the annoyances of a new home and a big move: researching termite bonds, buying a second car, numerous visits to the DMV, etc. I did get a great, out of print monograph on Fairfield Porter by John Spike, which I've been pouring over almost every night. (which is probably very obvious from these drawings) I miss the paint but am having fun with these....enjoy!

    Love your new series of drawings and I'll be curious to see how they evolve further. I keep wondering if you'll eventually want to paint Charleston's version(s) of the Gowanus Canal - along the Ashley and Cooper rivers. Not sure how artist friendly the more industrial areas will be though, so be careful if you do.
    Hope you're summer there won't be too oppressive.

    If you get a chance pop down to Edisto Beach and Edisto Island, if they haven't ruined it yet with developments it is a great place to go. In the spring there are an amazing number of wonderful conches and other shells and marine weirdness that washes up on the beach. If you travel along the back roads on Edisto Island there are all kinds of visual treats (or used to be)

    Thanks Larry. I've just seen Charleston's industrial areas from a distance...the mills and refineries along the rivers. They seem very inaccessable, but I haven't ventured out there to see. I love the constant stream of freighter ships passing by as they leave the harbor, something that reminds me of Brooklyn. I'm not sure what I'll seek out to paint...probably some of my house and family, some things downtown, some industrial stuff. It's definitely a different landscape here, but the light and massive oaks with the spanish moss are stunning. I'll have to check out Edisto beach; sounds great. It is damn hot here, but that should make my paintings dry quicker, right? I also wanted to thank you for putting my blog link up on your blog recently...more exposure is always appreciated. talk soon!

    Very cool to see you working at the new digs. Good drawings. I especially like the one with the doll. The strong verticals and sense of recession from perspective being controlled by the horizontals from the stairs, door frames, rug, etc. keeps it an intimate family scene while showing this strong sense of distance. I like it!
